The greatest challenge facing the South African Association for Cultural History is to recruit members whose associations extend beyond the boundaries of culture, language, and religion. The association seeks to be known as a professional body in which any South African will feel at home and will be eager to contribute to the study of South African culture.
The leaders of the association must take the initiative to raise the standard of culture-historical research to a high level. This applies to journal articles as well as conference papers. At the same time, the association as a whole – namely the council as well as ordinary members – must identify the bottlenecks related to culture and heritage preservation in South Africa and take the initiative to address and resolve them.
The South African Society for Cultural History must and can make a substantial impact on the reconcilliation between cultural groups in South Africa. This can be achieved by mutually expanding knowledge of the various cultures, respecting them, and learning to value them.
